The acceptance worldwide of OSI by all the major computer manufacturers and procurement agencies is resulting in many computer communication networks now being designed and implemented that are based on internationally agreed standard protocols defined by ISO. Associated with any computer network there must be instrumentation for the monitoring, analysis, test and management of the network. Most items of instru¬ment action that are currently available for use with OSI networks, however, are relatively low-level, in so much that they are concerned mainly with monitoring and analysing the usage of the transmission medium. The aim of the research undertaken in this thesis, therefore, has been to investigate the design and im¬plementation of a number of novel software tools to perform these functions. In particular, three software tools have been investigated to achieve these objectives; first, a network protocol analyser has been developed that uses advanced graph¬ics techniques as an aid for the analysis and presentation of protocol behaviour; second, a dynamic tester has been developed which provides the facility for the on¬line testing of an OSI-based communication subsystem via the network, and third, a network manager tool has been implemented to investigate the management of the communication subsystems in each node connected to an OSI network. Collectively, the tools described provide interactive facilities for use during the monitoring, analysis, test and management of a complete OSI network.
